Mayor Manny Santos was born in 1968 in Portugal (as Manuel Augusto Neto dos Santos), into a home with no electricity or running water and lived a subsistence farming life. He immigrated to the United States with his family to escape a repressive authoritarian government and seek a better life.

He attended public schools in Hartford, Connecticut. Immediately after high school in 1987, Santos enlisted for active duty in the United States Marine Corps. He is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, which liberated the invaded nation of Kuwait. Santos worked on fighter jets and was an expert sharpshooter. While serving his country, he received numerous medals and campaign awards, some being: • Kuwait Liberation Medal • Navy Unit Commendation • National Defense Service Medal • Southwest Asia Medal with 2 -Stars.

After his military service, Santos attended the University of Connecticut and obtained a Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has worked in Connecticut’s manufacturing industry for over 15 years, including running his own product development consultancy. More recently, he has taken on a role in the healthcare insurance industry as an analyst. In 2013, he was elected Mayor of the City of Meriden; his very first race for public office and ending 30 years of one-party rule (having been elected as a Republican). He’s credited for clarifying the appointment powers of the mayor; opening the City’s boards and commissions to average citizens; allowing the general public to address the City Council on any topic; issued more line-item budget vetoes than any previous mayor.

In 2018, Santos ran for U.S. Congress in Connecticut’s 5th District. Having won his party’s endorsement in the convention, he went on to win the primary elections against two other better financed candidates. His bid for the seat wasn’t successful, but proved his popularity.
